Broadway Sunday Farmers Market Opens for Third Season!
The Broadway farmers market is back on May 11 with an ever-increasing array of Washington farm products and locally-produced foods. Starting on opening day, you can buy beautiful heirloom lettuces and greens, asparagus, rhubarb, baby vegetables, fresh herbs, wonderful cheeses, artisan breads and baked goods, eggs, meats, seafood, cut flowers and beautiful plant starts. As spring turns into summer, you'll find more and more fruits and vegetables: sweet local strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and other berries, as well as all kinds of tree fruits, heirloom tomatoes, summer vegetables of all kinds, wild mushrooms, preserves and ciders.
The market also hosts several cooking demos, live music, produce tastings, and activities for kids. A schedule of events will be posted to www.seattlefarmersmarkets.org in May.
Why shop at a farmers market? Freshness and flavor are the most common answers given by loyal market shoppers, but there are plenty of others: to learn about the seasonality of fresh foods, to meet the folks who grow our food, to try varieties you've never seen before and can't be found in grocery stores, to support our local economy, to keep local sustainable farmland in production, to make healthier food choices…and to shop in a friendly, open-air environment amongst friends and neighbors and farmers.
Each year Market farmers also donate thousands of pounds of food to local food banks and other non-profits in need of fresh produce (in 2006 the market donated over 2,300 lbs). Market vendors accept Quest cards (food stamps), WIC and Senior FMNP coupons - just ask at the market info tent for details on how to buy fresh produce with your benefits.
New treasures arrive every week as the seasons turn, so come often and ask farmers about their upcoming harvests. To receive a weekly email update from the market with news about what's ripe 'n' ready each week, email nfma@seattlefarmersmarkets.org.
