BIA ADVISORY BOARD MEETING

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

BOARD MEMBERS PRESENT

Paul Dwoskin (Broadway Video), Greg Serum (Your Man Friday), Ken Bauer (Charlie’s)

ALSO PRESENT

Denise Harnly (SNG), Tina Vlasky (OED), Ta Nguyen & Phil Olson (BECU), Molly Burke (Farmer’s Market), Louise Chernin (GSBA), Dan Bridges & Mike Leech (CleanScapes), Mary Klein (Staff)

Paul Dwoskin, called the meeting to order at 8:10 am

1. FARMER’S MARKET

Molly reported that the final announcement to the FM has not come.  This will tell them when the last day of use will be.  Molly hoped to have a report by next week.  They are still working with the City Council to find a permanent spot on or near Broadway.  West side of Cal Anderson park is being considered.

The market attendance is up 30% over last year.

Paul asked if the market is mature enough to be year around.  Molly said they are discussing this internally.

2. CLEANSCAPES

100 hours were spent cleaning graffiti on Broadway.  This is part of the grant money from SPU.  Dan Bridges has taken over the supervision of work on Broadway.  He still walks the street once a week and receives a report from Bob Knudson on behalf of CHCC, outlining the new hot spots to be cleaned.

CleanScapes is working with the city to time the gutter cleaning in order to blow debris in the street for the sweeper.  Dan worried about noise from the blowers, the consent was to go ahead.  This was mostly a retail urban area and people should expect some noise.

They are also working with DPD on the dumpster free program.  It might be possible to designate certain areas as dumpster free, especially if the only place for a dumpster is on the sidewalk.

3. SOUND TRANSIT

Next Wednesday 5pm at Seattle Central Community College Sound Transit will show their design for Broadway.  It is 30% completed, they would like public input before they go any further.

CHCC met with City Council on the mitigation.

4. OLD QFC SITE

Design review was last night.  The space will consist of retail space from 600 to 1500 sq ft.  The top of the building (residential) will be stucco and vinyl siding.  The plan calls for at grade parking (daylight) which was objected to by one member of the Planning Commission.  The BIA would like to see the parking above ground.  As it is readily in site and consumers prefer above ground parking.  There has been no approval as yet.  And as such there is no start date for the project.

5. STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL

Paul asked for a volunteer to sit on the Stewardship Council as a representative of the BIA.  There were no volunteers so Paul asked that everyone please pass the word.

The council meets the 3rd Tuesday of the month from 5:30 to 7pm.

6. WINTER LIGHTING

CHCC purchased 100 wreaths to be hung, along with the ‘good’ Broadway lighting, not only on Broadway but the Pike/Pine corridor.  CHCC also has to think about storage for the wreaths once they come down in January.

7. CLEAN & GREEN EVENT

October 13th there will be a street cleaning along Broadway, Pike/Pine, 12th and 15th Streets.  CHCC is sponsoring the event and has hired an event coordinator.  Mary will be in contact with the BIA members as well as those who volunteered for the BIA Spring Sweep.

8.  WEBMASTER

Mary’s was asked to find a webmaster for the BIA website.  Several people said they knew of someone who lives on the hill and might be interested.  They are to get the information to the BIA office.

9.  CHCC UPDATE

Paul announced that the retail study had been completed.  The committee is meeting to decide what the next step will be.  Jack has hard copies at the CHCC office if anyone is interested.

The CHID is moving forward.  Burke & Associates is putting together a report on how to get the CHID going and how it can work.  It should be done by the end of the year.

10. ALL CITY CHAMBER EVENT

Mary asked for volunteers to go to the Annual All Chamber Business After Hours event on October 4th.  Ta said he would like to go.  Paul asked Mary to reply and please get 4 tickets to the event.

NEW BUSINESS

Louise Chernin announced that Jerome from the GSBA office is getting an Art walk started on the 2nd Tuesday of the month.  She would like to see it expanded to include Broadway and not just Pike/Pine.

She also said that since GSBA has moved its office to the hill, that’s where they would very much like to market.

Tina will set up a meeting with the new Precinct Capt as soon as possible.

The next meeting of the BIA Board will be on announced at a later date.

Meeting adjourned 9:15 am
