Paul Dwoskin, called
the meeting to order at 8:05 am
1. FARMERS MARKET
The Market representative met with
the developers for the Bank of America property and told them they had
the spot for the 2008 season. Ken Bauer suggested the WaMU parking
lot and a possibility of then closing part of Thomas. Jack Hilovsky
will join Chris Curtis to meet with the WaMU contacts and see if it’s
a possibility for 2009.
The market was up 20% in attendance
over last year. The BIA and the Farmers Market will try to keep
the market as close to or on Broadway as the many visitors to the market
also visit stores on Broadway.
2. CLEANSCAPES
Dan Bridges report that Cleanscapes
has won Area 3 for cleaning services starting in March of 2009.
They are waiting on the City to pass the dumpster free zones, no dumpsters
on sidewalks or public areas, before pursuing anymore clients.
Tina Vlasky suggested the Clean & Safe committee of the CHCC take
up the case on Capitol Hill, including Broadway. Louise Chernin
also suggested an incentive for businesses to sign up, one week free
or free bags. Michael Wells thought getting testimonials from
those businesses who have already signed up would help get new customers.
3. SAFETY FORUM
Michael Wells gave a briefing about
the Capitol Hill Safety Forum on November 27th. He
wanted all the organizations to please get the word out to their email
lists. He asked all those in attendance to think about volunteering
for the evening.
4. USPS on Broadway
Paul Dwoskin, Stewardship Council
member, said they have been unable to get a response from USPS about
building a new post office on Broadway. He thought maybe approaching
Sound Transit in a land swap or new building construction, to make sure
a post office stays on Broadway. Paul will meet with Tina to brainstorm
an approach.
5. BANNERS ON BROADWAY
Mary sent Tai an estimate for banners. However, the BIA does not have a banner policy at this time. It is the consensus of the Advisory Board that a policy needs to be in place before we can accept the offer of BECU to make banners. BECU only wants 6 months use of the poles.
Mary will get some help from other
districts to see about creating a banner policy for the BIA.
6. TREES AROUND OLD QFC SITE
Some residents and businesses by
the old QFC site are upset that the trees on the block will come down
before new construction. The city arborist has inspected the trees
and found most are not healthy and need to be removed. The developer
has promised to replace the trees with a different variety. Tina
will ask the city to issue a statement.
NEW BUSINESS
It was suggested that the Broadway
Advisory Board meeting move to the Chamber offices. Jack Hilovsky
said he would be happy to have us use the office. This avoids
the noise from the restaurant workers setting up for the day’s business.
The next meeting of the BIA Board
will be on announced at a later date.
Meeting adjourned 9:10 am
