Michael Wells, called the meeting to order at 8:04 am

1. FARMER’S MARKET

Chris and Molly reported 1200 customers at opening of the market.  Most Vendors sold out of food and the crepe vendor was a hit.  The bad news is the market did get a letter from BoA announcing that plans were in place to build on the lot in the near future.  Three other markets are in jeopardy of also losing their space.  Chris would like the BIA’s help in contacting the city council and other city officials to try to save common area’s where the markets can set up permanently and to save common areas in the city. If the city loses all its common areas it will affect all neighborhoods.

Louise Chernin, ED of the GSBA, said she would write a letter and Paul Dwoskin said since we had state legislature and city council member at the opening we need to tell them of the problems facing the markets.

Erika noted that when sound transit finishes by John and Denny there will be no building above the underground tracks.    While they are building, Denny will be closed and use of the street might be possible.  Paul also pointed out that Cal Anderson Park might be available now that the city took down the old building on the west side.

2. CLEANSCAPES

The one problem that persists are the side streets, they are not cleaned on a regular basis.  Paul asked that more attention be paid.  Keegan said he would put it on his list.

Keegan also reported that Chris Martin offered to buy “No Trespassing” signs for all the businesses that didn’t have any.  Paul would like Ben Vogt to design new signs with the BIA logo.  Mary is to talk with Ben about the design.

There is an ever growing problem of stickers on all the street signs.  Mary is to find out who exactly owns the signs and is suppose to clean them.  Keegan said he does report the problem to the city on his reports.

3. SNG

Denise handed out flyers for the East Precinct Crime Prevention Coalition meeting at Cal Anderson Park meeting shelter on May 24th 6:30-8:00.  The East Precinct captain will be in attendance.  The topic is Crime Prevention through environmental design.  This is in keeping with the new transit station coming to the hill.  Michael Wells asked for volunteers to please go on behalf of the BIA.

Mary will send out the press release to the BIA email list.

4. CLEAN SWEEP

There were 70 to 75 volunteers, mostly residents who met and helped with the cleanup.  The only problem, the city did not deliver the cleaning equipment it promised.  Paul and Sandy had to purchase and borrow brooms and cleaning equipment so everyone could participate.

King 5 had a clip on the news and there will be pictures in the Capitol Hill times.  Sandy will send thank you letters and pictures to Sally Clark, Jamie Pederson the OED.  She will also thank Noah’s Bagels and Starbucks for supplying refreshments.

Mary is getting a group together to sticker the brooms and dustpans.  She will arrange to have them brought to the hill.  Some will be handed out on Saturday.  Keegan said he would send a truck to pick up the garbage and recycle accumulated from unpacking the equipment.

5. JUNE RATEPAYER MEETING

Club Lagoon is hosting the June 18th ratepayer mixer.  This is a chance for the ratepayers to get together to bring the BIA Board any concerns and meet with their fellow business owners.  Ryan Howard also would like to present the businesses with his plan to bring free wifi to Broadway.  Comcast has asked to sponsor this meeting.  Louise thought in the sense of fairness, to announce if any other business owner wanted to sponsor the next meeting and present a 10 minute pitch they could do so.

Monday June 18th from 5:30 to 7:00 was chosen.  Mary is to work with Ryan to get a letter and a flyer to all businesses.

6. PRIDE

Shannon Thomas, ED of the LGBT center said the Queer Fest is Saturday June 23rd.  There will be a march only along Broadway starting at 11am and conclude at Volunteer Park where there will be vendors and musical groups performing all day.  They are still looking for sponsorship for the event.

At dark 3 Dollar Bill Cinema will show “Hairspray”.

Shannon will send Mary a press release.

NEW BUSINESS

The new Capitol Hill Chamber is now in charge of winter decorations.  They will pay for hanging and taking down of the BIA décor.  There will be no new arrangements this year as the city denied their grant to pay for new decorations.  The BIA has no budget for new one.

GSBA announced they are opening their independent office on Pine and Belmont in two months.

The next meeting of the BIA Board will be on Monday, June 18th, 2007

Meeting adjourned 9:15 am
