1. Club Lagoon
Owner Ryan Howard presented a letter and outline of what he was doing to try to curb the escalating violence that usually begins when the club closes. Ryan has hired a new company to provide DJs and promote a LGBT night at the club. He has also hired Rick Wyatt to design programs to try to control the crowd. Ryan stated that his goal in coming to Capitol Hill, was to attract an older (25-35) clientele. He will only feature 80’s music in his club from now on, and will make sure he has proper security on site.
Ryan gave his business card to everyone and asked that they call him directly anytime problems arise.
The BIA assured Ryan that we welcome clubs on Broadway and hope to work out any problems, as we hope that night life does bring new customers to our restaurants and retail shops.
2. FARMER’S MARKET
Molly and Chris brought flyers for shopping bag stuffers for businesses to begin advertising the Farmer’s Market opening. They did find a new business started by a young college student, “Ethnic Breads”. They hope to have organic beef added to the sales as well.
The BIA informed them that Sally Clark will come to the opening to ring the opening bell and give a short welcome speech.
The BIA also will be “Brushing Up Broadway”, Paul asked Chris to have a truck at the market to haul away any trash swept up by the event.
3. Denise Harnly (SNG)
Denise asked if the BIA would support a grant for SNG, Drug Free Communitees”,a Federal Grant. Michael Wells stated that the BIA would gladly support SNG. Denise will let Mary know what she might need in proof of support.
Denis also broke the news that the East Precinct is getting a new Captain, Paul McDounagh. Michael asked Mary to contact the Captain and set up a meeting to have coffee and walk Broadway to meet the owners and get familiar with the stores.
4. CLEANSCAPES
Chris stated he hired 2 men who had worked for a waste management company. Dan Bridges will be taking over the management of Broadway. Keegan will still be our contact for day to day problems. Dan is organizing a dumpster free blitz of Broadway to try to get most if not all of the businesses on board.
Paul told Chris that garbage around the cans was getting better.
Mary is to get Chris the “rules sign” and he will put that up with the City plaque. It was also decided to cut down on graffiti the bulletin board would be cleaned twice monthly.
5. Broadway Unique
The Board want to get the BIA back on track to help the businesses on Broadway and not concentrate on the new Capitol Hill Chamber.
Michael asked that everyone bring two new people to the April board meeting. Louise suggested the BIA have a brunch and invite the ratepayers to the meeting to try to get more businesses to participate.
Paul also asked for help to get the new website up and running properly.
Mary will include agenda in the email blasts to ratepayers.
6. Chamber Up Date
Michael reported the Chamber board has been elected and will proceed with hiring an ED. There will be a reception, at a place to be named later, on the 27th to thank the outgoing board and welcome the new board.
7. BANNERS
Because of concern by SIFF and Farmer’s Market the BIA will design a new plan for banner next year. As for this year Chris Curtis asked if the Farmer’s Market could have 4 more banners hung then they have been allotted.
8. Grant
Paul suggested the BIA hire a PR person to handle the announcements of the “Brush Up Broadway” event. It was decided to hire her and have her work with Ben to promote the event.
The next meeting of the BIA Board will be on Thursday, April 16thth, 2007
Meeting adjourned 9:35 am
