Michael Wells, BIA Chair, called the meeting to order at 8:05 am
1. Farmer’s Market
Molly reported that the market will open May 14th on Mother’s Day. The market will give free flowers to all the mothers who attend the market that day. They will begin the ad campaign April 1st or 2nd by handing out flyers and give businesses handouts for their patrons.
The market will also put up a permanent sign on John.
A suggestion was made that maybe the market put up a tent in the plaza between the bank and adjacent building to be more visible to Broadway traffic.
Molly will get Paul a blurb for the BIA to post on their new website.
Michael asked all businesses to please help promote the market.
2. CleanScapes
It was reported to Gaby that there is a problem with the dumpster in the Pocket Park. It seems to be leaking grease and the restaurant (Pho Cyclo) then puts soapy water on the cement which makes the sidewalk very slippery. The sidewalk is stained and looking very bad right now. Gaby will renew her efforts to get the owners to sign up for the dumpster free program. She also reminded everyone that CleanScapes also picks up grease if it’s in covered buckets.
We asked Gaby to have CleanScapes please pressure wash the sidewalks on Broadway in April.
Gaby reported that they have heard from very happy businesses about the clean up along the Pike/Pine corridor.
3. Seattle Neighborhood Group
Denise Harnly asked if the BIA would sign the MOU for their program Drug Free Communities. Michael Wells said the BIA would be glad to sign. The program would work with the homeless youth on Broadway and Capitol Hill.
Denise also reported that Broadway Human Services will have a Tea Cart in Cal Anderson park staffed by homeless youth.
4. Broadway Development
Lisa Stewart said the first meeting of the Economic Advisory Action Committee would meet on Friday the 17th. The first meeting would be to identify common areas and solutions.
They would also define immediate needs and long term goals for Broadway.
She asked that the BIA make an effort to have better communications with the CHID. Michael said the BIA would work on tighter communications.
Lisa will also work with the BIA on writing a small grant being offered by OED.
5. PRIDE
Michael Wells reported that after much discussion with the businesses along Broadway, the BIA has decided the best use of it funds and the best way to celebrate Pride on the Hill was an aggressive advertising campaign.
Someone suggested keeping the ad simple but maybe include a map to show all the businesses that support Pride. Everyone wanted a ‘fun’ ad. Paul will ask Ben Vogt to create an ad campaign. The BIA will also put a flyer for handout at the Farmers Market.
6. Flower Baskets
Mary Klein gave the Board the bid for flower baskets along Broadway this summer. The bid was for $7,000. The board approved the bid and asked Mary to find a vendor who would water the flowers. It was suggested that maybe CleanScapes would work with PSKS to water the flowers this summer. Mary will report back to the board the findings of a vendor search.
7. Banners
The banners that now hanging on Broadway cannot hang over the street according to contacts at SDOT street use. The BIA asked for the help of OED to see if we can receive clarification of rules of banners along the street. Lisa will ask Chris to call Joe Bell department manager.
8. Grants
Lisa reported that she believe DSA would be the fiscal agent for the BIA. Lisa wants to meet with Emma Moreno of the Department of Neighborhoods to coordinate the grants. Mary will get Lisa the contact information.
9. Nonprofit status
Larry Woods-Palmer will start the process of nonprofit status for the BIA.
10. Website
Paul reported he and Liza would have the new website up by April 1st. He asked anyone with input to please let him know what they would like to see on the site.
Meeting was adjourned at 9:35 am
