Michael Wells, BIA Chair, called the meeting to order at 8:02 am
1. CLEANSCAPES
Signe Gilson is a new hire for CleanScapes. She is concentrating on food waste deposal. The Board asked her to concentrate on the corners of Harrison and Broadway E.
Chris Martin asked approval to have his cleaning crew change the time of day they are on Broadway. He is going to have them work some evenings rather than mornings. He will try this for a few weeks to see how it works.
Several Board members complained about the street trash cans not being picked up every day. Mary Klein will call and email Vic Roberson with SPU to let him know of the problem.
2. CHID UPDATE
Chip Ragen stated that he and David Scharer are finishing the Action Agenda for the project. They are weeks away from completion. When completed they will make one last attempt to sign up those building owners who have been complacent about the CHID. Chip said they will ask some tenants to work with them to pressure landlords to sign.
3. BVATT UPDATE
Michael Wells reported “the team is rounding up the end of the process”. The plan goes to the Mayor and City Council on July 9th. But first there will be a public rollout of the plan. The meeting will take place at Seattle Central Community College on June 20th from 5:30 to 7:30. All the members of the Action Team will be present to answer questions and concerns from citizens and businesses on Capitol Hill.
Mary suggested getting flyers out to all the ratepayers. She will coordinate with CleanScapes for distribution before Tuesday.
4. GRANTS
Brad Davis reported his findings as to why the BIA failed to receive a large grant this year. Brad had in depth talks with Jose Cervantes and project manager Emma Moreno. Brad gave a handout of the summary and 5 steps that need to be considered before the BIA applies for another grant next year.
Brad also stated Jose and Emma recommended the BIA have a representative attend committee panel meetings in advance of the application review period. That way the committee can come to know the needs from a business perspective. At present there is no business person on the review panel.
5. RETAIL CONSULTANT
Paul Dwoskin reported that a contract has been signed for a retail consultant. Her name is Alison Reed whose office is in Portland, OR. She will develop a plan and make recommendations to help build a vigorous retail district to the hill.
OED is overseeing the project with should be completed by October 1, 2006.
6. Bs
Paul Dwoskin suggested that some of the retailers put the old Broadway Bs in their storefront windows and sell them to the general public. David Dillman of DSA said it would be fine to have the checks made out to DSA, with BBIA in the memo portion of the check. He will add any monies to our account DSA already oversees.
Mary will have George Pearisaeff bring Bs for advertising. Also posters will be made for storefront windows.
7. PRIDE
BIA Pride banners are up and are beautiful. Michael has contracted for 3 full page ads in “The Capitol Hill Times”, “SGN” and “The Stranger” to welcome all celebrants to Broadway on Pride weekend.
Shannon Thomas reported that there are about 100 groups participating in a mini-parade to follow the Dyke March on Saturday. The march starts at 6pm and will end at Volunteer park. There will be a rally and entertainment starting at 7:30pm.
New Business
The next meeting of the BIA Board will be on Thursday, July 20th.
Meeting adjourned 9:00 am
