2. SOS
Jeff Corey described the new employment program for homeless and transition youth at the concession stand in Cal Anderson Park. There has been a problem with some youngsters who cannot pass the Parks Department background checks. Michael will write a letter to the Parks Dept. supporting the program and asking that each youngster be individually evaluated, and emphasizing the very high level of adult supervision.
3. FARMERS MARKET
Chris Curtis reported that the Market had a great opening day on Mothers’ Day. There were 25 vendors out of a possible 32, with about 850 people visiting the Market. Michael will contact CleanScapes regarding a smelly dumpster area behind the bank.
4. FLYING HOUSE PRODUCTIONS
Larry Woods-Palmer reported that Flying House Productions will hold a rummage sale in the old Safeway building May 20 and 21.
5. BRAAT UPDATE
Michael reported that the community has been assured that the funds cut from the OED grant (reduced from $500K to $120K) will be replaced. The revitalization plan will be presented to the Mayor in July. He noted that one lesson learned is that we need to keep bird-dogging commitments made to Broadway. He reported also on the plan to create a Capitol Hill umbrella group, whose activities should increase the chances of successful petitioning of the CHID.
6. SOUND TRANSIT UPDATE
Paul Dwoskin reviewed the principles the BRAAT proposes for the construction area: continuous retail frontage; no corner parcels; set-back from the street; little/no traffic disruption; retail or temporary retail in the buildings bought, prior to teardown; affordable housing; parking; a new post office.
7. FLOWER BASKETS
Shirley Bishop reported that Mary Klein, Paul, and Michael will be meeting with DSA next week to ensure that the Molbaks’s invoice gets paid so that the baskets can be hung. She has requested a contract from CleanScapes for watering.
8. BANNERS
Shirley reported that Supergraphics will have the Price banners hung June 8 or 9. Mary has asked two vendors for bids on removing the banner poles from the traffic control poles (as SDOT requires), but there is no money for the job.
8. Nonprofit status
Paul reported that the current plan is to postpone seeking non-profit status until the BIA is in a position to hire an Executive Director.
9. Website
Paul noted that many businesses have not yet submitted their site material. This is an excellent marketing opportunity, and he urged everyone to take advantage of it.
New Business
The next meeting of the BIA Board will be on Thursday, June 16.
Meeting adjourned 9:10am
